CAMP COUNSELLOR (2 positions)

Camp U- CAN (Understanding Children’s Abilities and Needs) is designed specifically to assist children age 7- 13 years of age, with or without a formal diagnosis but display challenges related to mental health. Camp U-Can offers these children a chance to achieve success at a specialized summer camp with professionally trained camp counsellors. Campers will work in in groups alongside the staff team which consists of child and youth care practitioners, social workers, recreational therapists and equine specialists. Campers will participate in a variety of activities to build confidence, self- esteem and positive relationships. Activities include equine learning with a focus on managing emotions as well as caring for self and others, drama, art, physical activity and horseback riding.
Counselors are responsible for;
• Ensuring campers physical and emotional safety on a daily basis
• Managing children's varied responses in relation to their mental health challenges
• Act as a role model and mentor by constructive participation in all daily activities
• Assist in the design and facilitation of daily activities
• Utilize a strengths - based perspective in their approach to campers
• Work one-on-one with children who are having challenges participating in the program
• Help campers resolve conflicts appropriately
• Work as an effective team member with other camp staff
• Communicate and receive direction from Camp Supervisors
• Completion of Social Work, Child and Youth Care or Recreational Therapy programs
• Certified in First Aid and CPR
• Clear Criminal Reference Check- completed in the last 6 months
• Experience working with children challenged by mental health
$15.00 per hour
